Jetfire Daffodil

Once established, a Water Wise plant can survive periods of limited water availability. These plants are environmentally friendly because they decrease the amount of water needed to maintain a healthy landscape and help lower water bills.

A deer resistant plant is considered rarely or seldom browsed by deer. This does not mean the plant is immune to grazing. Deer often eat anything if food is scarce.

About This Plant

Daffodils are one of the most popular spring blooming flowers. They come in an array of colors including hues of yellow, white, pink, green and salmon. Daffodil flowers may be single or double, grow singly on a stem or with multiple flowers per stem, and height varies from 6 to 20”. Many varieties are fragrant and possess excellent cut flower qualities.  Daffodils grow best in areas with cold winters, cool springs, and cool summers. Choose varieties that mature at different times to extend the bloom season.

How to Water

  • Water bulbs thoroughly after planting in the fall.
  • Daffodils require little direct care and water. During long dry periods, additional water may be necessary.

How to Plant

  • Plant Daffodil bulbs 4-6” deep, 4-6” apart. In USDA zones 8-9, plant 6-8” deep for best results.
  • Daffodils will grow in part shade but thrive in full sun.
  • Set the bulb in the hole, pointy end up, then cover with soil and press firmly.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.

How to Fertilize

  • Bulb growers recommend fertilizing in the early fall when the bulbs are putting out new roots and in the spring after blooming.
  • The common formulation 9-9-6 is ideal for most types of bulbs.

How to Prune

  • Remove spent flowering stems to keep plants tidy and to redirect energy into the bulbs.
  • Only prune dead or completely yellowed foliage as the leaves of bulbs act to collect energy for the next year’s display.
  • Growers recommend that foliage should not be twisted or tied together. Simply allow the foliage to fall naturally to the ground.
